Synovial Joints

Synovial joints are the most prevalent in the body. They have a synovial cavity filled with lubricating synovial fluid that reduces friction. These joints enable a wide range of movements and are located in areas like the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

2. Joint Function

The primary role of joints is to enable movement between bones, supported by several key components:

– Articular Cartilage: A smooth, rubbery tissue covering bone ends at joints, reducing friction and absorbing impact.

– Ligaments: Strong connective tissue bands linking bones to one another, offering joint stability.

– Tendons: Fibrous tissue bands connecting muscles to bones, enabling movement.

– Bursae: Fluid-filled sacs that minimize friction between tendons and bones, or between bones and muscles.

Arthritis is a prevalent joint disorder marked by inflammation and pain. Common types include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout—with osteoarthritis being the most widespread, affecting millions globally.

2. Tendinitis

Tendinitis refers to tendon inflammation, typically caused by overuse or repetitive strain. It can affect any joint but is most common in the shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles.

3. Bursitis

Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, leading to pain and swelling around the joint. It often arises from repetitive movements or prolonged pressure on the affected area.

Recent research has offered valuable insights into joints’ role in human movement and function. Key findings include:

1. Joint Stability and Movement
